Over 50, 000 commercial motor-cyclists may lose their means of livelihood if the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) actualizes its plan to ban commercial motor-cyclists from the city centre, says the chairman of Motorcycle Transport Union of Nigeria (MTUN), Chief Obi Nwaogwugwu. Chief Nwaogwugwu made the revelation on Monday while speaking to journ-alists in Abuja on the intended ban of commercial motor-cyclists by the FCTA. €œThe announcement came to us as a surprise because government is aware of the economic and social services being rendered by commercial motorcycle operators, he said. He said the first mode of transportation in the FCT is the commercial motorcycle as most families in the FCT benefit directly or indirectly from their services, adding that banning them will only bring more poverty to families in Abuja.
He said the present discriminatory attitude will psychologically affect those that are unemployed by the government as he added that crime rate in the FCT is likely to increase to 70% as most youths will be forced into committing crime. On the action to be taken by the union, Chief Nwaogwugwu said, €œWe will not fight with guns or machete but if we are pushed to the wall something funny may happen. Also speaking, the chairman, Apo branch of the un-ion, Comrade T, A Danjuma said that 20 million families within the FCT and its environs especially students will be displaced as their parents may not be able to pay their school fees and other needs.
€œWe fend for ourselves and families it would be bad if the present government does not encourage us, he said. He said 25% of the members of the union are gradu-ates we should have been provided jobs by the government or other companies, but they are in the À¹Ãƒ€¦Ã¢‚¬Å“job to keep body and soul together.
