Written by Ibrahim Egboli

In a bleak New Year message to Nigerians, Vice President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday offered an unreserved apology citizens over government's failure to deliver 6,000 megawatts of electricity as earlier promised.

President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua, who has been on foreign treatment for several weeks had told frustrated Nigerians that the regime would generate and distribute 6,000 megawatts before the end of 2009.

The government, however, succeeded in producing about 5,300 megawatts of the promised figure.

“Our target, which was modest, was set at generating 6,000 megawatts of electricity by year end.

“While I am happy today to report that we have achieved some substantial measure of success, I regret to mention that for a number of unforeseen and unavoidable reasons, this target could not be met.

“Millions of Nigerians are, therefore, still without power. For this, I render on behalf of government very sincere regrets,'' he said.

Jonathan frowned at the long queues at fuel stations since November as a result of government contemplation to remove subsidy on petroleum products, thereby increasing their pump price.

He assured citizens that measures were being taken by the government to make “this unfortunate trend a thing of the past''.

He also expressed the readiness of the administration to enthrone peaceful and credible elections in the country.

“Our elections must enjoy the indelible mark of credibility and acceptability, both nationally and internationally.

“Towards this end, we remain focused in the actualisation of the promise of working closely with the National Assembly to implement far-reaching electoral reforms to ensure that future electoral politics in Nigeria will witness a new lease of life,” he said.

“Let us use this 50th year of our statehood as a fulcrum for our national renewal and repositioning for a more productive engagement in the comity of nations.

The Vice President who praised Nigerians for their prayers for the fast recovery of Yar'Adua, said the government was all out to confront poverty in the New Year.

"True progress and development of the country can only begin when all our citizens, without exception, move out of a marginal existence.

"We must, therefore, redouble all efforts to collectively work toward the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which set the appropriate benchmarks and milestones for bringing our entire population to acceptable levels of social and economic wellbeing,'' he said.

In achieveing this, Jonathan said, the Federal Government would double its efforts in the areas of fiscal discipline, commitment to budgetary implementation, projects completion and cutting down on waste.

He also emphasised government's commitment to relentlessly pursue the national effort to combat corruption.

"This is a battle that must be won. To this effect, let me stress that in the New Year and beyond, greater demand on accountability, transparency and performance would be placed on all public officers,'' he said.

He said government would go beyond policy pronouncement and priotise attention on training and retraining in the areas of entrepreneural development, skills acquisition and financial incentives to position youth to managee their own businesses.

He added that government would build on the peace achieved in the Niger Delta region through the amnesty programme, by implementing programmes relating to youth empowerment, social and economic development of the region.

He regretted the unpleasant experiences of religious intolerance and violence resulting in the loss of lives and property in some parts of the country.

He condemned the recent foiled terror attack on a US plane by a Nigerian which, he said, inflicted deep wounds on the psyche of the nation.

"Followwing the unfortunate incidence, our security services will be more vigilant and also work concertedly to guarantee the security of lives and property throughout the country, especially at our ports of entry and exit,'' he said.

According to the Police boss, this development caused a division in the sect .Some members left and  others stayed back with the sect leader. Former Nigeria's first Lady, Mrs Maryam Babangida has died in Califonia, United States after battling with cancer. She was 61. Her elder brother ,Chief Sony Okogwu described her as a kind hearted person who was accommodative, peaceful and always ready to help people.

Okoguw who spoke amidst tears while receiving sympathizers at his Ship House resident in Marafa area, Kaduna regretted that he did not see her before she passed on.

Okogwu who was apparently devasted by the death of his sister barely managed to utter a few words when journalists sought for his comments. He said “my sister is a very good and kind hearted person who is always willing to help people.

“She is very a at his ccommodative and peaceful. She has decided to go, I would have been happy if she had seen me before she left. Many people prayed for her recovery but God decided to take her. It is very painful, but what can we do? May her soul rest in peace.

Meanwhile the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has expressed shock over the death of the former first lady, saying her death is not only a loss to her family but to the entire nation.

The forum in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Anthony N. Z. Sani National Publicity Secretary said prayed God to comfort her family stressing that her legacies as first lady are starling.

“ Her death is a big blow and irreparable loss to the family members, her friends and the entire nation. Mrs. Babangida may not be with us because of the void she leaves in the lives of family members and friends. But in a way, she is very much around because she needs no mementoes for tombstone to remind her family, her friends and the nation of her legacies, going by her commitment to the empowerment of rural women.

“But as painful as her death may be to must of us, we know we cannot trade places with those who did not gain directly from her activities. Yet we pray to God to grant the entire nation the fortitude to endure what cannot be changed and to remember her by living up what she stood for in the daily lives of the people, especially the women folks. Nigeria would miss Mariam’s charisma, her compassion and her generosity. May her soul rest in peace” Mr. Sani said.

Also in his reaction, the Secretary of the Kaduna state Chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev.Joseph Hayab, lamented that it was unfortunate that after a long struggle with sickness, the former first lady passed on.

He described her as a pace setter who brought glamour to the position of first lady and gave the womenfolk a sense of belonging during the time her husband was military president.

“It is unfortunate that after a very long time of struggling with sickness, she is gone, but death is inevitable and all of us will one day die. We pray that God will comfort her and her entire family.

“Mrs Maryam Babangida is actually a pace setter because she brought about the glamorous aspect of the first lady that is being celebrated in Nigeria today, in other words she put the womanhood into a more meaning role in governance, in the past, it was very silent.

“So the womenfolk will definitely celebrate her. Those who have been following developments in Nigeria and the need for equality will definitely celebrate her. We will miss her dearly, but I believe that the kind of spirit that she has been inject into the Nigerian woman will continue to live because the Nigerian woman needs to wake up to her slumber and actually be part of nation building.

“Of course there may not be any constitutional role for the wives of those in power but there is nothing wrong for the wife to contribute her quota positively on the lives of the people .Maryam Babangida will definitely be remembered for those positive role.
